Editor,

News of a bus accident on the outskirts of Kigali, near Gitikinyoni junction, last Saturday evening, where 16 passengers died after a minibus was crushed by a cargo truck, was devastating.

Though I am not writing to apportion blame, I want to appeal to Traffic Police to be more vigilant and check the over-speeding by some drivers.

Though some accidents may be beyond human control, I believe, over-speeding contributes a lot to traffic accidents. According to Police, the minibus overturned as it tried to overtake the truck, only to risk a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle.

In the process, it hit the truck. Our road network is one of the best in the region and there is no reason why our people should continue to die in such circumstances. Traffic Police should act quickly to enforce discipline on our roads.
