NATIONAL University of Rwanda (NUR) face Egyptian side Al Guish in a third place playoff this afternoon after Wednesday’s disappointing CAVB Men Africa Club Championship semi-final defeat against Kenya Prisons.

The varsity side and their fans will feel hard-done after surrendering a 25-23 first set lead to eventually lose 2-3 in Cairo, Egypt.

NUR lost the second set 21-25 but fought back to win the third set. Things then fell apart as NUR lost back to back sets (21-25 and 19-21).

The varsity side was inches away from rewriting history as the first Rwandan club to play in the competition final. The team also blew their chance of playing in the 2011 FIVB World Club Championships in Doha, Qatar. Fidele Nyirimana’s side will now play Al Guish in a third place play-off. The latter suffered a straight set thrashing at the hands of reigning champions Al Ahly (25-23, 25-13, and 25-19).

Kenya Prisons are looking to emulate their female counterparts who retained the continental crown after beating Kenya’s Pipeline in the final.
