NYAMAGABE - Staff members of the Automobile Guarantee Fund (AGF), on Friday, visited Murambi Memorial site in Nyamagabe District to pay respect to victims of the 1994 genocide against theTutsi buried there.

At the memorial, they heard how Interahamwe militias together with soldiers killed over 50,000 Tutsi who sought refuge at the then technical school, now transformed into a memorial site.

"On the night of April 21, 1994, buses transporting militias, gendarmes (the equivalent of police) and soldiers arrived and started shelling the school until early in the morning when Interahamwe entered to kill whoever was still alive,” Emmanuel Nshimiyimana, who works at the site narrated.

Speaking shortly after touring the site, Bernardin Ndashimye, the Director General for AGF, noted that what happened (at Murambi) was beyond comprehension.
"I am touched and very shocked by what I have seen here.  As I toured the site, I kept asking myself what the sense of life is.”

"Tutsis here were killed with brutality and violence that I could not imagine,” Ndashimye said.
"This should serve as a lesson to all Rwandans and their leaders. Everyone must know that heinous politics lead to death. Let us join hands and prepare a better Rwanda void of the genocide ideology,” he added.

Jean Bosco Rwigema, an AGF employee, called up on the population to visit genocide memorials to learn from history.

"I implore everyone to come here and see how Tutsi were reviled by the then government. Murambi shows the consequence of that hatred. Everyone must come here and learn from this,” Rwigema said.

After visiting the site, the AGF staff members donated food stuff, worth Rwf 100,000, to two vulnerable genocide survivors’ families in Ngera cell, Gasaka sector.

They also contributed Rwf 100,000 to one family whose house was recently destroyed by heavy rains in the sector. AGF is a government institution which compensates people injured or whose property is destroyed by unidentified or uninsured automobiles.
