Over 500 local leaders given free mobile phones

KARONGI- Authorities in Karongi District yesterday distributed free mobile phones to Executive Secretaries of all the 538 villages (Imidugudu) that make up the district.According to district officials, the phones, worth Rwf3.5m were handed to improve communication and rapid sharing of important information among local leaders.

KARONGI- Authorities in Karongi District yesterday distributed free mobile phones to Executive Secretaries of all the 538 villages (Imidugudu) that make up the district.

According to district officials, the phones, worth Rwf3.5m were handed to improve communication and rapid sharing of important information among local leaders.

"The phones will help us save time. They will make it possible to get all necessary information from local leaders as and when needed,” said Bernard Kayumba, Mayor of Karongi.

He urged the local leaders to make good use of the phones.

The District Police Commander, Supt, Gilbert Ruhorahoza, noted that the phones would help in monitoring the security of the population.

"We are confident that this development will enable relevant authorities to respond to emergencies, mainly related to security and health sectors,” Ruhorahoza said.

Zephrin Serugendo, one of the beneficiaries in Rubengera sector, observed that the phones would aid local leaders sensitise the public to foster sustainable economic development.

"We expect constant communication flow with our direct supervisors and it will certainly facilitate our working conditions,” said Serugendo.
