NYAGATARE-Police in Nyagatare District have arrested two men who were ferrying illicit brew worth Rwf 2 million.

According to Police, a Toyota Corolla Reg: RAA586D was ferrying 50 cartons of "Suzie Waragi” and "Chief Waragi”, while another Toyota Carina, Reg: RAA181T was carrying another 41 cartons.

Police said that the vehicles were impounded along with their drivers, Moses Agaba and Joseph Kayihura, both residents of Nyagatare District.

"We first arrested Agaba in Rwimiyaga Sector and later arrested Kayihura at Hilltop Hotel in Kicukiro District, Kigali city, where he had escaped,” a police official told The New Times.

Speaking to reporters at the Police post, Kayihura admitted that his vehicle was carrying illicit brew but said that he had lent his car out.

"I gave the vehicle to another person but later heard that it was impounded by Police with illegal brew. I decided not to report to Police because I suspected that police would arrest me,” he said.

Most of the illicit brew smuggled in Nyagatare District is manufactured in neighbouring Uganda. Police said that smugglers cross into the district via porous borders. They warned residents against smuggling illegal brew warning them of tough punishment once arrested.
