GICUMBI - Residents of Byumba Sector in Gicumbi District have decried the poor drainage system in Byumba town. The residents expressed their concerns, yesterday, following heavy rains that left two families homeless.

Speaking to The New Times, Pierre Byakatonda, one of the residents said poor drainage issue is always reported to the local authorities but to no avail.

"The authorities are aware about it, because we have been reporting this matter. They should urgently look into it before more damage is done,” Byakatonda said.

When contacted, the Executive Secretary of Byumba Sector, Jean Marie Vianney Gahano, said plans were underway to construct the drainage system.

"We have already requested residents, especially owners of commercial buildings, to construct a drainage system for the rain water or buy water tanks to reduce the running water,” said Gahano.

"You see, the town is located on a hilly area; this calls for residents to cooperate with us in solving the matter amicably,” he added.

Gahano said the district also plans to tarmac the roads in the town in the near future.
