KARONGI- Seven local leaders in Murundi Sector, Karongi District resigned after they confessed to have lied that there were no thatched houses (Nyakatsi) in the sector, yet details emerged that there were 189 of them.

The officials included the sector Executive Secretary, Innocent Kamanzi and Albert Niyigena, in charge of social affairs.

Others are the Executive Secretaries of all the cells; Clementine Kayitesi, Jean Claude Ntibiringirwa, Ignace Nikomeze, Claudette Uwera and Jean d’Amour Kagimbangabo.

The leaders are said to have alleged that the sector had only 11 thatched houses.

The situation degenerated when residents in the sector were asked to contribute over Rwf300,000 to support a neighbouring sector towards the elimination of Nyakatsi.

According Karongi Mayor, Bernard Kayumba, this was an administrative error which should not go unpunished.

"Such government programmes are entirely meant for the benefit of the general public and we shall not tolerate leaders who deny residents their rights,” he warned.

He revealed that a total of 828 thatched houses have so far been replaced with modern houses since the campaign started almost one year ago.
