Located at Kimihurura, Africa Bite, is true to its name. The only foreign thing we meet on our visit was the soothing soft rhythms of country music. Everything else screams African, from the décor to dishes.

This homely bistro offers local and regional cuisine. This include the rare Luwombo, all dishes are prepared the East African way with sparing amounts of vegetable oil, allowing the delicious ingredients to retain their natural tastes.

Besides their well prepared lunch buffet that costs Rwf3, 000, a soft drink inclusive, another thing that attracts a big number of people to this fine place is its serene environs.

Being in a residential area, the restaurant itself was created out of a Maisonette- like house, when you are having a meal; it feels like you at a friend’s home. Their buffet and the Saturday lunch cooked and served in folded banana leaves (Oluwombo) is also a big pull.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t this the only restaurant in Kigali that prepares and serves food from Inyungu (clay pots)?  Their plates are also moulded out of clay.

Smoked rice, boiled cut pieces of Cassava, Maize bread, mashed Matoke and sweet potatoes to  go with ground nuts sauce, boiled fresh green peas, chicken stew, fresh beans and fish were among the buffet items the  day we visited.

A whole chicken, grilled or fried goes for Rwf7, 500, whole fish goes for Rwf5, 000. Africa Bite has the finest Tree tomato Juice (Ibinyomoro) and passion in town.

A glass cost Rwf700, a soda at Rwf500.When it comes to good quality food, ambiance and fair prices, few places in Kigali can beat Africa bite.  It’s also ideal place to spend an evening with family or friends.

The staff; attentive and fast
The bad points; the serving area where people line up for the buffet self-service is too limited in space

The good points; good food, great customer service

The crowd; There were mostly professionals from the corporate companies in town and a couple of gov’t workers.

The toilet; very clean.
