GICUMBI - Police officers in Gicumbi District, yesterday, completed a three-day training in Gender Based Violence (GBV).

The workshop, which was conducted by Intrahealth, an international NGO, was aimed at equipping the officers with skills to handle GBV cases in the district.

Gicumbi District Police Commander, Bertin Rutsindura, said the training was timely for the police officers, because there is need address GBV in Gicumbi.

"We have been strategising on tackling the GBV cases over time so this training is timely as it equips officers who are at the forefront of checking this vice,” said Rutsindura.

Rutsindura noted that there was a decline in GBV, attributing it to the government’s effort to address the issue. Liliane Niyibizi, the GBV officer, said doctors cannot handle cases of gender based violence by themselves.

"The training centred on how the police can handle such cases without hurting the victims and elaborating more about GBV,” Niyibizi said.

"The police will be working closely with medical personnel to protect the victims,” she added.
