NYANZA – Religious leaders have a key role in fighting against corruption and injustice in society, the Deputy Ombudswoman, Bernadette Kanzayire said.

She made the remarks, on Monday, while addressing leaders from different religious denominations in Nyanza District at the opening of a two-day workshop on the role of clerics in the prevention of corruption and other forms of injustices.

Kanzayire asked participants to be sincere and fair in their daily leadership functions.
"We request you to be honest leaders who do not cheat their followers.

It’s always important to keep it in mind that the funds and other resources you manage belong to your respective religious establishments; not you; they’re a community property,” she said. "You must ensure they are used properly and as planned.”

"If religious leaders lead an exemplary life, they are likely to be role models to their followers; the latter are likely to emulate them,” she said, adding that they must always focus on what benefits the community instead of pursuing personal gains.

Lucie Nyiramana, a pastor with the Methodist Church, vowed to become an outspoken anti-corruption crusader and to always advise everyone who has been tempted into corrupt tendencies.

"We teach (believers) them to be honest as Christians. If anyone of our members sins, including giving or receiving a bribe, or involve themselves in any injustices, we will visit them and counsel them accordingly,” she said.

"Using the Bible, we will show them that corruption is against God’s will and that it is not authorised anywhere,” added the pastor.
