RUTSIRO- Residents in Rutsiro district this week donated cash and assorted items to support vulnerable and poor Genocide survivors.

The donation includes Rwf10million, five tonnes of different food supplies, iron sheets, goats, clothes and an assortment of other household properties.

According to the local leadership, the donation is part of the designated activities to mark the ongoing 17th Genocide commemoration.

District Mayor, Gaspard Byukusenge revealed yesterday that all the items were voluntarily offered after a series of sensitisation and mobilisation campaigns.

"Some of the money will be used to renovate a memorial site that is not in good condition  and those whose houses were demolished due to rainfall, will also be facilitated to build new ones,” Byukusenge said.

He pointed out that as a way of improving the economic status of the residents; cows will also be bought and distributed in line with the government’s cattle stocking programme.

Emerance Umutoni, a resident in Boneza sector observed that working together as a team has significantly helped to improve their social and economic welfare.

"By contributing to help each other, we have developed a spirit of unity and our living conditions have certainly improved.”
