New York - The New York State Assembly has adopted a resolution on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi calling upon the US government to honour it.“It is the sense of this Legislative Body to urge President Barack Obama and the members of the New York State Congressional delegation to commemorate the 17th Anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide perpetrated against the Tutsi,” reads the resolution.

"It is the sense of this Legislative Body to urge President Barack Obama and the members of the New York State Congressional delegation to commemorate the 17th Anniversary of the Rwandan Genocide perpetrated against the Tutsi,” reads the resolution.
According to Rwanda’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, the resolution was proposed by Assemblyman Keith Wright, who, on April 15, formally handed a copy of the document to Ambassador Eugène-Richard Gasana, the Rwandan envoy in New York.
Wright is an African-American, who is the Democratic County Leader of Manhattan and represents the 70th Assembly District, in Manhattan, comprising West and Central Harlem.
His district is diverse and has a strong African population, which he sought to represent through this resolution.
