Editor,

I am writing to add my voice with regard to on the increasing illegal structures mushrooming in Kigali and other districts. To make matters worse, some of these structures are being built in wetlands.

I live in Kabeza, Kicukiro District but every morning, I see illegal buildings put up. Now and then, landlords add extensions to their existing houses in total disregard of the standing rules.

What are the inspectors from the Rwanda environmental Management Authority (REMA) and Kigali City Council (KCC) doing?  Are they not paid to monitor and ensure that residents abide by the rules that govern housing construction?

Don’t KCC and REMA have representatives at the village level? Let us join hands to get rid of illegal structures and also save our wetlands from encroachers.
