Editor,

This is in response to a story about police in Nyagatare District who arrested a woman and a motor-cycle taxi operator, over human trafficking.

The human trafficking issue in the region is of great concern. The victims are always young girls, some young enough to be in primary school. Money is used to lure them into prostitution. I would like to appeal to the East African Community partner states to adopt severe laws, aimed at punishing those involved in human trafficking.

Though the police in the region are yet to do something to eliminate the vice completely, protecting the population requires everybody’s attention.

For instance, schools and parents should strongly increase vigilance and monitor where their children are going every time. Many times, female students are fond of asking for sick leave from school authorities, but instead of going home, they end up in night clubs.
