KAMONYI- Staff of the public bond warehouse of Rwanda, Magasins Généraux du Rwanda s.a (MAGERWA), on Friday, donated food and household items worth Rwf1.5m to genocide survivors in Bimba village, Gihara cell in Ruyenzi Sector.

The goods were handed over by Lambert Nyoni, the Director General of Magerwa. He was accompanied by a group of 35 staff members and district leaders. The team also visited Kamonyi genocide memorial site and donated Rwf500.000 to help in the maintenance of the site.

Nyoni said that the institution would continue supporting genocide survivors and empower them to become self sustainable as part of its social responsibility.

"The donations are a sign of supporting and walking together with the genocide survivors. It may be small for now, but there will be a continued outreach by the staff and the institution” he said

Nyoni further urged other companies and institution to follow their example so as to have a collective effort in supporting persons affected by the Rwandan genocide against the Tutsi.

Kamonyi Vice-Mayor of social affairs, Marie Alice Uwera, hailed Magerwa saying it was the first time institutions had supported the Bimba genocide survivors’ village and such initiatives should be taken up by others.

One of the beneficiaries, Jérémaine Kalima, said that the donation would be used to boost the welfare of survivors especially the ageing widows.

"There are no words to express our gratitude, but we are thankful because some of the support will enable the beneficiaries to regain hope in life. We ask that Magerwa continues to support us to become self sustainable in future,” Kalima said.

The Mayor of Kamonyi and Ibuka officials also guided the Magerwa staff on a tour of the Kamonyi genocide educational center. The team also paid tribute to over 32.000 genocide victims buried at the district memorial site.
