Varsity students hold memorial night vigil

KARONGI- Thousands of students from Kigali Health Institute (KHI) and Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), over the weekend, honoured victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, with a night vigil in Kigali.

The students were joined by government officials and university staff.

During the vigil, the Minister of Youth, Protais Mitali, reminded the students of their role in rebuilding the country.

"Students in higher institutions of learning have a major role in promoting sustainable development of the country,” Mitali said.

He challenged them to actively get involved in activities that promote unity and reconciliation.
"Remembering the innocent victims should not be left to only those who were affected by the Genocide,” the Minister said.

Senator Antoine Mugesera urged the students to desist from any form of divisionism and various manifestations of the Genocide ideology.
"With the knowledge you have acquired in school, you ought to take a leading role in all aspects of development,” Mugesera said.

Zephany Nsengumuremyi, a second year Environmental Health student, observed that joint efforts were required to help the survivors.

"It is necessary that as we remember the victims who perished during the Genocide. We will also help survivors to lead normal lives,” Nsengumuremyi pledged.
