According to the New Times dated February 18, the government decided to implement a healthy agricultural project in three border districts of Gisagara, Gicumbi and Burera.

The Rwandan government agreed to work hand in hand with the Italian government through the United Nation Food and Agricultural Organisation to make the project a reality.

The program focuses on modernisation of agriculture by providing a readily available market. It also seeks to reduce subsistence farming and improve livelihood through diversification and commercialisation of agriculture and livestock farming.

With this quality development at hand, I suggest that farmers are grouped in different farmers’ cooperatives in the district and involve in intensive cultivation of fruits, milk and honey production. The government should also assist farmers in form of small grants especially at the post harvest level to maintain quality. Good business plans can also be created so that farmers access credit from banks.

It is common knowledge that these cooperatives will greatly help farmers in transforming their produce and make it fit for a competitive market. This will in turn make the country have food security and the citizens will not have to worry about famine.
