Insights : VISITING THE GYM SHOULD NOT SCARE YOU

For fitness entrepreneurs and the fitness industry in general, the start of the year is regarded as “boom time”. Many people stream into gyms with all hopes of achieving their fitness goals. Many are still doing that now. However, it can feel as if you have landed on planet Mars and working out can seem too terrifying to contemplate the first time you enter the gym.

It can be fun

For fitness entrepreneurs and the fitness industry in general, the start of the year is regarded as "boom time”. Many people stream into gyms with all hopes of achieving their fitness goals. Many are still doing that now.

However, it can feel as if you have landed on planet Mars and working out can seem too terrifying to contemplate the first time you enter the gym.

Intimidation is among the leading reasons why people do not join the gym. But if fitness is top on your list of resolutions this year, going to or joining a gym is really worth trying for one good among other reasons, it is the best place to start.

Instead of twisting your ankles and breathing smoky air on the roadside, the gym has professionals to ensure you exercise safely and effectively as possible. Picture this, you go out jogging in the morning or evening, what do you meet?

Gloomy faces going to or coming from work. No encouraging smiles, no one fit to inspire you or even give you a pat on the back. On the contrary, the gym offers variety and motivation from the instructors and members. Do not get me wrong. I am not trying to discourage you from jogging or chocking up your evening walks. If that is what you enjoy, then stick to it; remember the bottom-line is getting fit.

So if the sight of fit bodies and whizzing machines intimidates you, just remember that everyone, even the instructor, was new to exercise at some point. You may feel scared, but to everyone else, you look just like any other exerciser.

Good instructors will not only show you what to do but they also understand how you feel as a beginner and will also help you settle in and get over your anxieties.
Of course it may take you a few visits to settle and feel comfortable, but dedication, determination to learn, discipline and perseverance will soon make you feel at home and give you a sense of belonging.

But before you even go to the gym or start a new exercise regime, you need to think about what your fitness goals are, look around for a gym that is conveniently located and may be get to know what kind of people or class of people go to that gym. And not in bad taste or a matter of discrimination, but different individuals are used to different crowds, service and attention.

Think about what you want to achieve and why. Visualise yourself in the future after a consistent exercise regimen, see the benefits and make a commitment to yourself to reap them. Think about how you can best fit in at least three regular weekly sessions.

Just remember to treat each one of them like any other appointment. After all, it is an important meeting. ‘With whom?’ you may ask. Not, the instructor or your gym-males but with yourself.

Remember the gym’s staff is also there for you. Treat your gym instructor like a bosom-friend. He or she is trained, experienced and qualified to help you through. Good instructors never avoid answering your questions and they genuinely want you to get and will do whatever they can to help.
