GICUMBI – A delegation of 12 Swiss Cooperation Ambassadors from Rwanda, Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa, on Thursday, visited Gihembe Congolese refugee camp to asses the refugees’ welfare.The visiting delegation was received by representatives of United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) and Gicumbi District officials.
GICUMBI – A delegation of 12 Swiss Cooperation Ambassadors from Rwanda, Tanzania, Mozambique and South Africa, on Thursday, visited Gihembe Congolese refugee camp to asses the refugees’ welfare.
The visiting delegation was received by representatives of United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDIMAR) and Gicumbi District officials.
Mark Shakagabo, MIDIMAR representative at the camp, cited inadequate water supply, limited health facilities and accommodation among the main challenges faced at the camp.
"The refugee students who complete Ordinary Level of education at the camp are not able to pursue high school education due to financial constraints,” lamented Shakagabo.
The Ambassadors promised to forward the report to relevant authorities who shall liaise with the Rwandan government to find a solution.
Gihembe camp, located in Kageyo Sector, is currently home to over 19,000 Congolese refugees who arrived at the camp in 1997.
