The don’ts

Don’t forget it

Whatever you do, for the good of your life, don’t forget Valentine’s Day! You might be busy but just set a constant reminder on your phone.

Don’t do what you did last year

Try to be unique and experimental with other things like walking at night while eating ice-cream instead of going to a restaurant. If you do this, please don’t forget your National IDs at home.

Don’t Facebook

Keep that phone-tapping habit away as it may ruin your night. Your mate will be bored to hell. By the way, what would you be doing chatting with those lonely people online?

Don’t over spend

If you do, you will not have enough money to watch the Champions League game between Arsenal and Barcelona the following day, on Tuesday.

Don’t talk about your ex!

It is not only silly, but a very weak move! It doesn’t matter whether you wanted to compliment your partner or say something funny about your ex. The mere mention of "my ex” will make your partner assume that you still think about that person.

Don’t dodge work

This is the most important don’t! Your boss trusts you to understand that the company recognizes specific holidays and not Valentine’s Day. So, dodge work at your own peril.

The dos

Switch your phone off

When having dinner, switch it off. This way, you will avoid beeps and calls from your other wannabe valentine dates.

Lower your expectations

Simple, if you expect that your mate will give you a car for a Valentine’s gift and instead he gives you a handkerchief, you will obviously be disappointed.

Be romantic

This day comes once in a year. Just be romantic, banish all the bad thoughts. If you have a tendency of arguing all the time, spare this day, just be romantic…smile…look romantic. Valentines is all about romance.

Eat what you know

You may try to impress your mate by ordering mysterious food, which might cause both of you grumbling stomachs and ruin the whole night. My advice is, order for that huge brochette and "kabenzi” plus some Fantas or wines and dine away.

Send the gift to work

This might not be a good idea if the gift is, uhmm, not that nice (like saucepans or cups). But if it’s something nice like a rose or bottle of wine, send it to your mate’s workplace or school (for the former). This will assuredly make a statement in front of her colleagues.
