Rwanda on Wednesday take on South Sudan in the first game of the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Zone V Qualifiers which are underway at the Lugogo Indoor Arena in Kampala, Uganda.

The six-day competition commenced Tuesday, February 14 and will run until February 19, bringing together five nations namely reigning champions Kenya, Egypt, Rwanda, South Sudan and hosts Uganda.

They are battling for the lone ticket which is up for grabs to qualify for the 2023 Women's AfroBasket tournament scheduled in July-August in Kigali, Rwanda.

The qualifiers, which is a round robin competition, will see the team that will come out on top join back to back champions Nigeria, Senegal, Mali and Cameroon which already have an automatic qualification to the finals, having finished in the top four during the 2021 Women’s African Championship in Yaounde, Cameroon.

Rwanda on a learning curve for the final phase

Rwanda started the 2021 Qualifiers on a roll, winning their opener by stunning Kenya 77-45 in their first game before being pegged down by eventual winners Kenya and Egypt in the end.

Considering that they already have their feet there, the results will be used very much as a guideline to the big show coming up in Kigali.
