19 arrested for dealing in illicit brew, drugs

Musanze - A joint security operation conducted by Police and sector authorities, on Friday, netted 19 people in possession of illicit drugs including marijuana and illegal liquor. Police confiscated several volumes of the illicit brew commonly known as Kanyanga, and Chief Waragi, and packs of Marijuana, all from Teta Guorch, one of the slums in Ruhengeri town.

Musanze - A joint security operation conducted by Police and sector authorities, on Friday, netted 19 people in possession of illicit drugs including marijuana and illegal liquor.

Police confiscated several volumes of the illicit brew commonly known as Kanyanga, and Chief Waragi, and packs of Marijuana, all from Teta Guorch, one of the slums in Ruhengeri town.

"I decided to import Chief Waragi from Uganda during the festive  season because people wanted it,’’ Valentine Uwamahoro said, adding that she had stopped dealing in illegal brew after being caught last year, but the demand during the festive season was too tempting.

The District Police Commander Supt. Francis Muheto, urged residents to collaborate with police to fight crime, especially breaking the drug trafficking ring.

He said that the operation to crackdown on the suspected criminals in the town, was aimed at beefing security, and reducing other related crimes especially rape, defilement which are  facilitated  by the increased consumption of illicit drugs in the district.

Among the arrested were nine women. 
According to officials, all the 19 suspects will be brought before court for hear their charges.
