Jane has a boyfriend! Since when does having a boyfriend, make news, you must be saying! Well, since Jane got one.

We’ve talked about relationships, gossiped about who’s dating who and all that stuff on many occasions and from Jane’s revelations, I always thought she wasn’t into dating.

She talked about her late husband during such conversations and said she just couldn’t see herself with another man. "I’m too old now and all I want is to look after my son. A new man would be distracting…” she would always say. That’s why I’m surprised that she’s now seeing someone.

Of course I’m happy for her because I believe every woman deserves to be loved. It’s just the way she’s going about this whole thing that amuses me. For starters, she hasn’t come straight out to admit it or even introduce the guy to us. Not that it’s anyone’s business or that she should account to any of us but I just think that if you live with people, you should be able to share your joys, disappointments and whatever else goes on in your life.

However, Jane’s silence on her new relationship hasn’t stopped the rest of us from noticing what’s going on. Several of her male friends come to the house but there’s one particular guy who visits more often and their body language gives it all away.

No matter one’s age (Jane is in her forties); love has a way with all of us. I look at Jane smiling ear to ear every time this guy comes around and I just laugh. She makes sure everything is in order: From the cutlery to the food to the furniture. Clearly, she wants to impress him. My only hope is that the attraction is mutual.

I’ve also noticed that whenever he comes home, Jane goes out of her way to be nice to everyone. Suddenly, the mood swings are gone and we’re one happy family. These days, we even have evening tea (with milk and biscuits!) The boyfriend is nice too and respects us all. More importantly, he and Jane’s son Dennis get along pretty well. Perhaps his cool car and phone are the reason for this, especially the latter since he lets Dennis play games and videos on it.

I suspect one thing though, that the guy is married or committed to someone else. You don’t have to be a psychic to notice his reluctance to answer certain phone calls. It’s a mixture of dread and tension, typical of a married person who’s trying to avoid contact with their spouse while at the mistress’ but at the same time worried about the spouse’s reaction to the rejected call.

At first, I thought I was reading too much into it, and that perhaps he was just uncomfortable because there were so many of us listening in on his calls. But after all this time, you would think he’s used to us being around almost all the time.

However, he still takes his calls outside the house or sometimes simply puts the phone in silent mode. So you just keep seeing the screen flashing and know the caller is also persisting. I could be wrong, which is why I have chosen not to discuss my suspicions with anyone, especially Jane.

You know how it is with girls, if you mention things like that, they usually think you are just jealous and some will even tell the guy what you just said about him only to come crying later, saying that they wish they had listened to you.

My gut tells me I could be right and that this man is indeed hiding something. I guess we will have to wait and see. After all, nothing stays hidden forever.

To be continued…
