KARONGI – A total of 189 couples in Rubengera Sector, Karongi District, on Saturday, took marriage vows as part of celebrations to mark the International Day of the rural woman.

The colourful event attracted thousands of excited Karongi residents who braved the scorching sun to witness old happy couples, some as old as 70s, commit to each other.

Presiding over the ceremony, the Executive Secretary of Rubengera Sector, Emile Rukesha, urged the newlyweds to be faithful to each other.  "It’s necessary that you stay faithful to each other if you are to have happy and exemplary families.”

MP Landrada Umuraza reminded brides of their crucial role in socio-economic wellbeing of their families.

"Previously a woman was regarded as a dependant but this is the age in which women have to be role models and actively get involved in improving the livelihoods of their families” she said.
