In the spirit of facilitating better integration, the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration, has revealed that the Rusizi 1 border crossing, the main border between the towns of Kamembe (Rwanda) and Bukavu (DRC), will now be open 16 hours a day.

In a statement released yesterday, the Directorate says this is in line with government’s policy of promoting cross-border trade and free movement of people.

"With effect from October 28, 2010, working hours at Rusizi 1 border post will be extended from 12 to 16. The border will be opening from 6.00 to 22.00 (10 pm) nonstop,” reads part of the statement.

"This improvement is also part of CEPGL’s efforts to promote trade, movement of people and goods among its member states”.

The border posts between Gisenyi town (Rubavu District) and Goma (North Kivu Province) started operating 24 hours in April 21, this year.

"The intention is to make all main border posts between Rwanda and its neighbors operating on a 24-hour basis,” adds the statement.
