NYAMASHEKE - Illegal fishing items worth Rwf16 million were yesterday set ablaze in Shangi Sector, Nyamasheke district. The items are said to be threatening the survival of fish in Lake Kivu.

"Consumption of immature fish may lead to food poisoning and it has also led loss of life around the lake,” said Aime Fabien Kamali, the Executive Secretary of Shangi Sector.
Residents requested the authorities to also follow up on fishermen who target areas where fish lay their eggs.

"Such people end up catching very young fish and also destroying fish eggs before they are hatched,” said one resident.

The Vice Mayor, in Charge of Finance, Oscar Nzeyimana, said that improper fishing methods have been a hindrance to both development and environment in Nyamasheke district.

"Whoever is caught with illegal nets also needs to be followed up by the police. Improper fishing causes terrible outcomes,” he said.
