All political parties that operate in Rwanda are called to have a committee for the management of their assets and finances to be able to discharge their responsibilities.

The call was made by officials from the Office of the Ombudsman during a meeting with political parties under the National Consultative Forum of Political Organisations (NFPO) on 19 August.

The meeting aimed at facilitating political parties to understand the "Principles and laws governing the management of the assets and finances of the Political Unit".

In order for that body to be able to fulfill its responsibilities, its members are required to become more familiar with the rules and practices of political parties in Rwanda.

According to senator Lambert Dushimimana, in July last year the senate inspected political parties and found out that seven out of the eleven recognized political parties don’t have a finance and asset management unit.

Dushimimana added that this is in breach of the law governing political parties that was established in 2018.

Alphonse Nkubana the Spokesperson of NFPO said that the breach of the law was mainly caused by ignorance of the provisions of the law, adding that after the meeting, they expect things to change.

The Secretary General of the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) Edward Kalisa said that political parties work hand in hand to contribute to the development of the country, when the parties perform well it contributes to the welfare of the citizens.
