KIGALI - Senate president Dr. Vincent Biruta yesterday bid farewell to the outgoing Chinese Ambassador, Sun Shuzgong, at the Parliamentary Building in Kimihurura.

A statement issued after the meeting indicated that Shuzgong expressed high recognition of the partnership between his government and Rwanda.

Shuzgong, who has served as Chinese ambassador to Rwanda since 2005, pointed out that Rwanda and China have since furthered their trade and economic relations.
The envoy also informed the president of the Senate that a high profile delegation of Chinese MPs will next month visit the Rwanda parliament.

The Rwandan and Chinese parliaments have also enjoyed long-term relations. The parliamentary statement indicates that in a bid to strengthen relations between the two governments, the Senate president visited Chine in 2006 and currently, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs is preparing another visit to China.

"Ambassador Shuzgong pledged to continue following up on the relations of the two countries since he is going to be based in the Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry,” reads the statement.

Shuzgong revealed that he will be replaced by his counterpart who is currently the Chinese ambassador to Eritrea.

"The president of the Senate also hailed the relations between the two countries and pledged good relations with Shuzgong’s successor in order to maintain the good relations between the two States,” adds the statement.

China and Rwanda established diplomatic relations in November 1971 and since then, the friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries have been intensified.

China supports Rwanda in agriculture, infrastructural development, health and scholarships to institutions of higher learning.
