Editor,

As a breast cancer survivor, I would like appeal to all Rwandans to be part of this months’ global campaign against Breast cancer. This October, let us acknowledge all those we have lost and those who have not quit in the fight against breast cancer.

After randomly asking people about breast cancer, I realized that the extent of their knowledge was limited; most women do not know how to conduct the self examination breast test that could easily make-known lumps—which are possible malignant cancer cells.

Prevention is much better than cure in any life scenario. Living as a breast cancer survivor, I was lucky to discover the disease before it was too late.

Luckily the cancerous cells were surgically removed with my mammary glands and although I’m still weak from the medication, I am in a safe area of treatment for the next five years thanks to the medical care, love and support of my family.

Breast cancer once discovered in its first stages, is much easier to deal with than at a later stage when treatment cannot redeem your life.

Let this month of October be a season to bring public awareness on breast cancer. It’s not just a woman’s thing since everywoman lost to cancer is someone’s mother, wife or sister.
