RWAMAGANA - Three children were killed and two others seriously injured when a speeding truck run over them on Monday, close to Rwamagana town on the Kigali- Kayonza highway.

The children were pupils of Rwamagana ‘B’ Primary School. The accident occurred when they were on their way home from school at around noon.

The injured victims were rushed to the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK), where they remain in intensive care.

The driver of the Toyota pick-up truck and his assistant escaped unhurt after their vehicle overturned.
Police said the driver, who is currently being held at Rwamagana Police Station, was half asleep on the wheel as a result of accumulated fatigue when the vehicle veered off the road.

"The driver had dozed off. Drivers tend to overwork themselves and end up in fatalities,” said a traffic officer at the scene.

Addressing the bereaved family and other mourners, Jean Claude Cyuma, the Kayonza vice Mayor in charge of Economic affairs, said the accident was among the worst they had witnessed.
