KARONGI - Over 30 men in Karongi district are estimated to have volunteered to undergo vasectomy as a family planning measure.

Vasectomy is a men’s method of birth control involving a minor surgical procedure which prevents sperm from entering the seminal stream.

Statistics put Rubengera top with the greatest number of 15, while Gishyita,Gitesi, Mubuga and Ruganda are the other sectors where this method has also been
embraced by some individuals.

Fliazal Ndayambaje, is a father of six and happily married. He is one of the men in Ruganda sector who have since embraced this method. He says, "I was not happy to see my wife suffer as a result of the side effects
from the contraceptives she was using as a family planning measure.

I made a consent decision to go through vasectomy and we feel our married life is perfect.”

Jean Bosco Rutayisire, the director of health at the district explains that residents can be said to have fully understood the advantages of family planning and those
opting for vasectomy are even expected to increase.

However, statistics indicate that despite some men choosing vasectomy in Ruganda sector, the use of modern family planning methods among couples has significantly reduced in the last two months.

Health centre records show that in the past few months, there has been a remarkable decrease of family planning users in some sectors of the district from 24 percent to 13.4 percent.
