TEN of the eleven participating teams in the 2010 Afrobasket U-18 Kagame Cup yesterday visited Gisozi Genocide Memorial Centre to pay tribute to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The teams include defending champions Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Mali, Angola, Zimbabwe, Gabon, Congo Brazzaville and hosts Rwanda together with a delegation from Fiba-Africa.

After taking a tour around the site, the Secretary General of the local basketball governing body, (Ferwaba) Jean Lucien Mugabo said that the visit was aimed at showing the delegation the story behind how the 1994 atrocities were planned and executed.

"I had heard a lot about the genocide but there is so much I have learn’t today,” said Carlos Aik, Mozambique’s team head.

"It is so surprising to see the great strides the country has taken in the last 16 years.”
