MUSANZE -Town dwellers and the business community in Ruhengeri town, Musanze district, have something to smile about after the district revealed plans to install street  lights on the eight streets within the town centre.
According to the District vice Mayor, Jerome Mugenzi, the installation of public lights will cost over Rwf258m, allocated from the Common Development Fund(CDF).
The installation is expected to be completed within the next two weeks.

"Lack of public lights has been a big challenge to the district and the town residents, but we have finally got a confirmation from CDF, that money will be available in the next two weeks for this project which upon completion will be a big boost for business and security in the town,’’ Mugenzi said.

Ruhengeri town has over 37,000 residents with over eight streets and 10 hotels, but has been lacking street lights for the last ten years.

Residents have previously complained several times to the local authorities citing lack of public lights which has been a major cause of insecurity, and limited time of business operations.

"The installation is  long over due as we have expressed our concerns to the authorities on the lack of streetlights,’’ Colleti Musabyimana, a business woman in Musanze market said.

Meanwhile, last week, authorities intensified crack down on old fashioned structures within the town centre ear marking at least five buildings for demolition.

The new Executive Secretary for Muhoza sector, Claude Manzi, said new efforts are in place meant to transform and beautify the town, and residents are required to install pavements and construct new houses based on the town master plan.
