When the Ugandan community in Rwanda thronged Kigali Serena Hotel to celebrate their country’s 48th independence, no one suspected that there would be a surprise performance.

What initially started as a cocktail eventually turned into a lavish dinner, as the guest of honour, Minister Louise Mushikiwabo lead the crowd into a well- decorated hall where the function took place.

Uganda’s High Commissioner to Rwanda, Richard Kabonero and his wife welcomed the guests, who included Ugandan business community in Rwanda and many friends of Uganda.

After screening a short documentary portraying the beauty of the East African Country, guests were invited to a mouth watering dinner and that’s when the surprise act was unveiled.

Uganda’s renowned saxophonist Isaiah Katumwa was in the house to perform, as guests enjoyed dinner to celebrate the country’s independence from their British colonialists.

The crowd went into near total hysteria when Katumwa jumped into the stage for a superb performance.

Clad in a glitzy white coat and black silk pants, Katumwa sang heartily and fired up the crowd.

The Jazz maestro belted out his hits, including ‘Sinza’, ‘Coming home’, ‘My joy’ and many of his contemporary Africa Jazz compositions which made him famous.

After his 30 minutes performance, Katumwa received a loud applause from the guests in approval of his saxophone skills.

Also in the house was ‘The Next Level DJ’s’, who spun the wheels, sending the ecstatic crowd to the dance floor.

There is no better way that the Ugandan community in Rwanda could have celebrated their independence without inviting a famed saxophonist.

The celebration also attracted Senior Government officials of the Rwandan Government, members of the Diplomatic Corps and a cross section of different personalities were also in attendance.

Notable among the guests was Uganda’s Casino Tycoon Bob Kabonero and Buganda’s Prince Daudi Kintu Wasajja.

Two lucky winners, Kaliza Karuretwa and Mr and Mrs. Karasira won all expenses paid trips in a raffle draw to experience Uganda courtesy of Air Uganda.
