MUHANGA - Police in Muhanga District are holding a woman who allegedly drowned her new born baby girl in River Nyabarongo.

Pascalina Nyirandikubwimana, 22, allegedly committed the crime last month after her boyfriend, Evariste Kanani, denied responsibility for the pregnancy, Police said.

The incident occurred in Nyabinoni Sector. Residents said Nyirandikubwimana gave birth to a healthy baby and decided to drown it a few minutes after giving birth.
Speaking from Police custody, the mother admitted committing the crime.

"I drowned the child because I was afraid of my family’s reaction to the birth yet I had successfully concealed the pregnancy for a long time. My action was evil and I regret doing so,” she said.

Residents said Nyirandikubwimana tried to conceal the incident, but they immediately noticed signs of motherhood on her breasts and reported the case to local officials.
