MUHANGA- Farmers in Cyeza sector have resolved to increase food production during this planting season dubbed season A, so as to ensure food security.

The farmers announced their resolve last week, during a meeting to lay strategies for implementing the agriculture programs in the sector.

Sector officials also distributed 34 hoes to every village leader, in a bid to involve leaders in promoting agricultural activities.

The sector Executive Secretary, Sixte Mungwarakarama, revealed that the sector has also managed to build a cassava processing plant worth Rwf79 million, and has prioritized production of cassava (1800ha), maize (101ha) and Soya (21ha).

"Every village leader has to be involved in the strategies of achieving these targets. The donated hoes are a sign that leaders should be role models and point of reference for residents,” Mungwarakarama said.

Each local leader was asked to start up an exemplary piece of farmland and urged to uphold modern methods of farming to serve as an example to the other residents.

The residents also expressed optimism that the involvement of local leaders will help them a great deal in agricultural transformation.    

"The involvement of local leaders will give us encouragement to perform and follow their examples. This is also a sign of good leadership and it is the first of its kind,” one farmer commented.
