STARTING next season (2010/11), Primus league sides will be allowed to field only five foreign based players in their 18-man squads.

The foreign player quota rule was passed during Saturday’s Ferwafa General Assembly attended by officials from all top flight clubs at Ferwafa headquarters.

The resolution was one of many adopted ahead of the new season which kicks off on October 16.

Addressing the press after the meeting, the football body’s head John Bosco Kazura said that all clubs have to adhere to the new regulations when naming their squads for each league match.

"One of the resolutions reached in the General Assembly is that clubs have to play more homegrown players. We don’t mind a team having a squad of 600 as long as they stick to five foreign based players in each of their games,” Kazura, who is serving his second term, explained.

He also revealed that clubs had been urged to acquire legal status as well as lobby for sponsorship to avoid bankruptcy cases that hit the likes of Atraco and Electrogaz, forcing the pair to drop out of last season’s campaign.

"It is imperative that clubs take the initiative to look for sponsorship from corporate companies. There is a false perception that Ferwafa is supposed to fund clubs. Our work is to get sponsors for the league and not individual clubs,” he pointed out.

"We just don’t want a similar situation to that of Atraco or Electrogaz.”

APR, who won a treble last season, will be gunning for a record 12th title this season.
