Ideal interiors : DECORATING A NURSERY FOR TWINS

Everytime I see an expectant mother I rejoice with her and nothing prepares anyone for the arrival of a baby in a better way, let alone having twin babies. I am excited that yet again am going to be a God mother to the twin daughters of a very dear friend.

L-R : Twins nursery ; Beautiful gifts

Everytime I see an expectant mother I rejoice with her and nothing prepares anyone for the arrival of a baby in a better way, let alone having twin babies. I am excited that yet again am going to be a God mother to the twin daughters of a very dear friend.

Being away for two weeks helping my friend decorate the nursery to welcome her twin daughters in a month’s time, made me appreciate and salute all the women with twins.

The exercise was successful but very demanding, and we are just talking of decorating the nursery, what about when the babies arrive?

When one is having twins, it’s a natural instinct to stock up two of everything. But that’s not necessarily the most efficient plan, especially in the early days.

Two newborns can even share a single crib if space is tight. Don’t worry too much about the babies disturbing each other. After spending many months together in the womb, they are pretty accustomed to each other! Many parents find that the twins actually sleep better together, that they are comforted by each other’s presence.

Decorating a nursery for twins can be double the fun. If you are expecting two boys or two girls, you can use one décor style and colour palette throughout the space. If you will be bringing home one girl and one boy, consider dividing up the space to accommodate both genders.

When decorating a nursery for twins one may consider the following;

Decorate the twins’ nursery with a cloud theme to create a peaceful respite for you and your babies. Paint the walls light blue. Using a sponge and white paint, make clouds on the walls. If you prefer, you can use this design on the nursery’s ceiling instead. Place fluffy, white, cloud-like rugs on the floor and choose light blue bedding for the cribs. Hang mobiles featuring sky-themed objects, such as airplanes, birds and rainbows.

Create a rainforest-themed nursery, which will work for both boys and girls. Paint a jungle theme mural on plain white walls, or hang a border featuring monkeys and other rainforest animals. If you want a solid color backdrop for themed bedding and décor, paint the walls a fresh, green shade. Choose bedding with a rainforest motif.

Design a farm-themed nursery, which is also gender-neutral. Teach your children about different types of animals by hiring an artist to paint cows, chickens and horses on the nursery walls; do it yourself if you are creative. Store toys in country-inspired wooden crates, and decorate with miniature tractors and animal replicas.

If you are expecting a boy and a girl, another option is to divide the nursery into two spaces. Place a wooden room divider in the middle of the nursery, and decorate one side with traditional blue décor and the other side with a pink design. You can also choose two different, gender-specific themes, such as trains and princesses.

Decorate the nursery with soothing and eco-friendly "green” items, which will be beneficial for everyone in the family. Set up plenty of potted plants throughout the space to create a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere, and choose organic cotton bedding for the cribs. Paint the walls with non-toxic paint, and buy furniture made of recycled wood or bamboo.

All these cannot be done in a single day, parents of twins need to be more prepared than those having a single child. As much as the preparation of the twin nursery is demanding the satisfaction of a parent seeing their children in a comfortable nursery, knowing that they have tried their best, is a special feeling.
