THE National Special Olympics Committee Monday honored the body’s founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver.

The body’s president Anacet Ruzindana said that Shriver, who died last year, changed the lives of many locals.

"She started this foundation and helped over 50 countries start local associations to help mentally disabled people so the least we can do is honour her and we intend to make this annual,” Ruzindana said.

Special Olympics is a non-governmental organization which provides sports training for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

It started in 2003 and now boasts of over 11,000 members.
Shriver is a sister to former US president John. F. Kennedy.
