Human resource management expert and the former Rector of Kigali Institute of Management (KIM), Dr. Benjamin Akinyemi, has urged Human Resource (HR) managers to be more proactive, adaptive, creative and innovative, so as to achieve key human resource strategic goals.

While addressing a human resource managers’ workshop, yesterday in Kigali, Akinyemi, urged organisations to do more to be able to tap into the potentials of workers.

"The government is doing much to develop human resource within the country, but the organizations also should take a cue from government to maximize the potentials of their workers, he noted”

"I can say that human resource professionals have been confining themselves to routine issues, but as these seminars, workshops and conferences are coming up; they are eye openers to organisations and to individual HR professionals, enabling them to know the current trend in the 21st century.”

The one-day conference attended by over 60 HR practitioners was organized by the Public Sector Capacity Building Secretariat (PSCBS) and the Rwanda Human Resources Management Association (RHRMA).

"We decided to form a peer group where we can exchange experiences, have training and be able to better implement things as far as international standards are concerned,” said Alice Mugeni, chairperson of RHRMA.

"Some of our colleagues sometimes don’t interpret things such as policies and some articles in the public statute, in the same way. We hope to highlight the challenges that we meet in our workplaces in addition to forming a peer group which can help human resource practitioners in advocacy”.

The main HR strategic goals include providing superior customer service; creatively and innovatively recruiting talent and implementing a total compensation philosophy to attract and retain most qualified employees.
