Dorothy Mutesi was crowned Miss National University of Rwanda (NUR) 2010 on Friday in a contest marked by a spectacle of dramatic scenes that left many bemused.

An elated Mutesi received the crown from her predecessor, Viviane Umulisa, and then prepared to meet the throng of journalists.

Michèle Iradukunda and Erica Uwera came in as the 1st and 2nd runner-ups respectively.

Meanwhile, there wasn’t a great deal to write about the event which seemed more like a village beauty pageant.  The organisers struggled to attract many sponsors but by the look of things, their efforts were unsuccessful. 

The delayed start of the event raised annoyed the audience who had invested their time and money to attend.

It wasn’t until after 8.00 P.M when the jury composed of Rwanda Television’s Evelyn Umurerwa, Miss EWHA Koica 2008, Médiatrice Kagaba, Radio Salus presenter Jeado Castar and Jean Pierre Higiro was finally announced.

Local artists The Rain Paul, Dream Boyz and Rozy managed to cheer up the exasperated crowd; however, it was Da Black who livened up the event.

Clad in an orange jumpsuit with a black hood on his head and hands in chains, Da Black hit onto the stage and performed some of his hit tracks, including ‘Ntakabuza.’ He rocked and didn’t disappoint his fans.

Six contestants did the catwalk in different outfits and costumes, including Daddy de Maximo’s designs.

Tension got under the skins of the contestants during the final and toughest stage of question and answer.

One contestant could not answer when President Paul Kagame was sworn in following the recent presidential elections, while another had no idea whether President Kagame was out of the country or not. 

At the same event, Grace Uwase was crowned Miss Talent, Gloriose Uwimbabazi Miss Personality and Grace Birungi Miss Congeniality. They all walked away with cash prizes and many goodies, courtesy of Sulfo Rwanda, Space Cinema, Matar Supermarket and Rwanda Events.
