Editor,

The Kigali Central Teaching Hospital (CHUK) management wishes to make it clear that CHUK has not neglected Jessica Ishimwe, a patient currently hospitalised in the pediatric ward of CHUK as published in article in the New Times of 23rd September 2010.

Ishimwe is suffering from a rare lung and heart disease that cannot be treated anywhere in the world. CHUK has been following Ishimwe’s case since she was three years old.

The hospital has continued to give her supportive treatment and lung physiotherapy and monitoring her case very closely.

CHUK has continued and intensified supportive therapy. Since the disease is in its severe form, the patient cannot be weaned from oxygen and this has called for long hospitalisation of the patient.

CHUK is working around the clock to find ways how the patient can get a transportable oxygen supplement machine. That way, the patient could be discharged from hospital and go home with supplemental oxygen, the hospital is committed to continuing supportive treatment and physiotherapy.

For more information or clarity on this case contact the CHUK management.
