Nyagatare needs special attention

Editor, I read The New Times story yesterday about the increasing cases of rape and defilement in Nyagatare, and by extension, the Eastern Province, with horror. I cannot believe that here in Rwanda, where women and gender issues are at the forefront, sexual abuse is increasing in any region.

Editor,

I read The New Times story yesterday about the increasing cases of rape and defilement in Nyagatare, and by extension, the Eastern Province, with horror. I cannot believe that here in Rwanda, where women and gender issues are at the forefront, sexual abuse is increasing in any region.

I would think that with increased women’s rights, and their communication to the wider public, gender-based violence of any sort would be declining. So, when it increases in some places, I have to ask, "why”? Is there something wrong with Nyagatare?

Now that the issue has been brought to light, i hope that all concerned authorities can quickly come up with lasting solutions that will protect our sisters, mothers and daughters from such baberic acts.
