MEDIA practitioners have been urged to take up a leadership role in the fight against corruption. The call was made yesterday by Ombudsman Tito Rutaremara, while addressing over 40 journalists from various local media organizations at the opening of a three-day workshop on the role of journalists in fighting against corruption and injustice at Alpha Palace Hotel, Kigali.
MEDIA practitioners have been urged to take up a leadership role in the fight against corruption.
The call was made yesterday by Ombudsman Tito Rutaremara, while addressing over 40 journalists from various local media organizations at the opening of a three-day workshop on the role of journalists in fighting against corruption and injustice at Alpha Palace Hotel, Kigali.
"I advise you to take responsibility of fighting against corruption and injustice among Rwandans because this is a crosscutting issue that requires everyone’s contribution,” he said, adding that journalists should desist from reporting stories based on rumours and instead carry out thorough investigation.
The Ombudsman said his office had trained the population on how to report corruption cases, particularly through the use of the existing ICT tele-centres.
He said his office had not received any complaint of extortion by a journalist and called on the public to report such cases, should they arise.
Rutaremara said since February his office had received over 200 corruption cases and over 9,000 injustice cases across the country.
