HUYE- Police in Huye District are holding a man suspected to have stabbed to death a fellow resident during a fight in Matyazo Cell on Sunday evening.

According to Police sources, the suspect, Omar Ramadhan, is said to have used a kitchen knife to stab Aimable Nshuti after the latter, a member of the village community policing committee, intervened in a scuffle that began earlier at a nearby shop.

In an interview with The New Times at Ngoma Police station, Ramadhan admitted the crime. He, however, claimed that it was an accident.

"It was around 5.30pm when I went to buy cigarettes at a nearby shop, trouble started when the shopkeeper refused to give me the cigarettes claiming that I had not given her any money,” said Ramadhan.

He said that in the ensuing bitter exchange of words, a man who was also in the shop spat at him and a scuffle broke out.

"I fled the scene but a group of people followed me up to my house where a fight broke out,” said Ramadhan, a taxi driver in Butare town.

"In an effort to break away, I accidentally stabbed one of the group members using a kitchen knife that I had just bought,” he added.

The deceased, Nshuti, was described as a peace loving citizen in Matyazo Cell.
"He was always involved in fighting crime in this area, through his efforts, the sale and consumption of illicit brew had been reduced in this area,” said a local resident found at Ngoma Police station.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been taken to the University Teaching Hospital of Butare for a post-mortem.
