NYAGATARE — A student at Umutara Polytechnic University, last Saturday died after being knocked by a speeding motorcycle, Police have confirmed.

Sources at Nyagatare Police Post, said the deceased, Jean Pierre Kuradusenge, a second-year student at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was knocked at the University gate.

"He was getting out of the campus at around 6 pm when he was hit by the motorcycle,” Police said, adding that he died at Nyagatare Hospital where he had been rushed after the accident.

Police attributed the accident to overspeeding by the motorist.

However, the deceased’s friends gave a different account of the accident, saying the late Kuradusenge was travelling on a motorcycle from the campus when they collided with another motorcyclist.

"We heard something like a collision immediately after he left campus. We rushed to the scene and found him bleeding profusely,” one of the students said.

Scores of students who spoke to The New Times complained of lack of humps and zebra crossings, near the campus, to regulate motorists.

"You see, this road is narrow and always filled with students. There is need for a zebra crossing near the campus to prevent future accidents,” one of the students said.

"Police should also strongly punish Nyagatare motorists who ride recklessly because most of them don’t even have driving permits. We could not have imagined seeing our fellow student die like this,” another student asserted.

With the help of the university’s administration and contributions from students, Kuradusenge’s body was taken for burial to Butaro sector, Burera District in Northern Province.
