Thirty seven vulnerable families still living in grass-thatched houses in Rugarama sector, Burera district, have received iron sheets in a move to assist them in securing better housing.
Each family was required to make bricks for the construction of a new house, while the district donated at least 30 iron sheets.
According to the district vice mayor, Dorothy Nzayituriki, the district launched a special fund within its budget to enable vulnerable families to acquire decent housing.
She revealed that over 3,000 families have so far benefited, while over 1,000 families still live in grass-thatched houses.
The beneficiaries thanked the government for the support.
"We have lived in grass-thatched houses all our lives. These houses leak because they are vulnerable to ants.
Moreover it is very difficult to find grass for roofing,’’ Pierre Kirogoya and his wife said after receiving the 30 iron sheets.
"Grass-thatched houses are temporary.
There is no way to safeguard them from natural disasters such as heavy rains.”
Residents blamed poor hygiene and sanitation in some families to poor housing.
