ActionAid, an International NGO will, on Tuesday, launch its annual report on the state of hunger across 50 countries in the world. The report, referred to as a score card, is the second of its nature evaluating both developed and developing countries’ performance in fighting hunger.
The Kigali launch will be held at Serena.

The Hunger FREE Scorecard aims at evaluating countries based on their progress in fulfilling their commitments to end global hunger. Twenty eight developing countries and 23 rich nations are analysed in the report.

According to Sulah Nuwamanya, the ActionAid head of Partnership development, Fundraising and Communications, the organisation this year added in the Millennium Development Goal (MDGs) element to gauge how far governments had gone towards achieving them.

"We added the MDG element to see which countries are on track or off track with regards to the MDG - halving extreme poverty and hunger by 2015,” he said.
Nuwamanya explained that the indicators in the annual scorecard are based on government policies put in place to eradicate hunger. These, he said, include different legislations towards supporting agriculture and also government budget allocation towards agriculture investment.

The launch will include a video documentary of some success stories resulting from pro-poor government policies such as ‘one cow per family’.

The launch will also have a photo exhibition highlighting some of the success stories with both government interventions and Actionaid. We shall also have testimonies from some successful women farmers.  

The indicators are based on the actions that the UN has identified as the most critical to reverse growing global hunger.

ActionAid is a leading aid agency in the fight against hunger working with farmers in 30 countries and is so far spearheading a global campaign aimed at ensuring governments deliver on the first Millennium Development Goal: to halve extreme poverty and hunger by 2015.
