BURERA - Police on Thursday handed over a suspected Ugandan criminal who was arrested in Burera District after he reportedly attempted to break into a commercial building.

Wilson Rwakana was handed over by the Northern Province Regional Police Commander, CSP Peter Hodari and received by the officer in charge of Cyanika border post on the Ugandan side, Euzobia Muyambi.

He was arrested from Kaganda commercial centre, Kinyababa sector five kilometres from Cyahafi in Uganda’s Kisoro district.

For the last two months since his arrest, Rwakana had been hospitalized at Butaro Hospital, for treatment to injuries he allegedly sustained after being hit with a stone as he attempted to flee from residents chasing him.

"When he sustained the injuries, he was immediately taken to the hospital but he had no identification, and on being interrogated, confessed to having escaped from Uganda because he was wanted for crimes committed there,” Hodari said.

"He is a known criminal in Kisoro who was wanted by the police,’’ Muyambi said.

Police in Burera reported a rise in cases of cross-border criminal activities especially trafficking of illicit drugs and brews including Chief Waragi, Kanyanga and Marijuana.
