The sixth phase for the Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) exercise, an initiative to fight malaria, has kicked off in some parts of the country. In an interview with The New Times yesterday, Dr. Corine Karema, the acting Director General of the Treatment and Research AIDS Centre, said that the exercise kicked off on Wednesday in the seven districts of Nyarugenge, Gasabo, Kicukiro, Nyanza, Bugesera, Kirehe and Nyagatare.

In an interview with The New Times yesterday, Dr. Corine Karema, the acting Director General of the Treatment and Research AIDS Centre, said that the exercise kicked off on Wednesday in the seven districts of Nyarugenge, Gasabo, Kicukiro, Nyanza, Bugesera, Kirehe and Nyagatare.
The spraying will be carried out over 36 days in 54 sectors.
In addition to indoor spraying, the government has extensively promoted the use of mosquito nets.
Dr Kalema further revealed that an evaluation exercise is going on to assess the fight against malaria.
"This is the sixth phase ever since this program was launched in 2007 and we are now evaluating its impact in fighting Malaria countrywide,” Dr Karema said.
IRS is funded by USAID and implemented by Research Triangle Institute.
